The BadSpells are a high-energy power pop/rock trio that fuse catchy, melodic gems (think Weezer, Squeeze, Fountains of Wayne, and Oasis) with the aggressiveness and bravado of groups like Elvis Costello and the Attractions, Led Zeppelin, and T-Rex. What you get is a recipe for some seriously infectious sounds.

New York City, early in 2008…The BadSpells formed when Russell James Hughes (singer/songwriter/guitarist) and Max Hinojosa, IV (bassist/backing vocalist) went to a local music venue. Both moved from Austin, TX to NYC to pursue their musical careers. They were introduced to local drummer Angelo Merendino (originally from Akron, Ohio). The three bonded and started rehearsing. They put together a live show spearheaded by the strong songwriting and showmanship of Hughes, and anchored by the muscle of a true rock rhythm section in Hinojosa and Merendino. Soon came the gigs at clubs like The Knitting Factory, Arlene’s Grocery, The Living Room, The now defunct CBGB’s, Southpaw (in Brooklyn), Don Hill’s, The Rockwood Music Hall, and Kenny’s Castaways.

“The BadSpells are a fresh burst of energy…a driving, rocking, balls-out band!! They are the real deal!”
-Maria Kenny, Owner of the legendary Kenny’s Castaways-NYC

The BadSpells recently finished their debut album, which will be officially released in early 2010.  In the last few months, they have been featured on two commercial rock radio stations here in NYC, 101.9 RXP FM and 107.1 The Peak FM.  In addition, they are putting the final touches on their video for their single "Explode" which will also be released along with the album.  2010 is going to be a big year for this talented trio, so stay tuned.
